In addition to their passion and skill with Nebbiolo in Barolo and Barbaresco, the venerable Castello di Verduno is renowned for an allegiance to traditional winemaking and the preservation of local varietals. Pelaverga, masterfully vinted here, is a rare and indigenous Piemontese grape. It showcases engaging floral, berry and spice notes. A refreshing solo quaff, pair it with lighter fare like a caprese salad, charcuterie or roasted chicken sandwich on grilled focaccia with a schmear of garlic mayo. Some of the Castello di Verduno wines have a drawing of a flower found in the wine's vineyards. The Pelaverga label has a drawing of poppies which are called Basadone in local dialect (papavero in Italian). Basadone in dialect also means a little kiss - local tradition has it that Pelaverga is an aphrodesiac!

Matthew O. ★★★★★

The nose is pure Piedmontese charm—earthy, with a hint of dried cherry—and it drinks much lighter than I expected for a red. Perfect for a weeknight pasta dish where you want something complex but not heavy.

Aurora ★★★★★

This Pelaverga is surprisingly vibrant for a Piedmont red—the light body and subtle spice make it perfect for a chill evening. I cracked it open with some salami and couldn't stop sipping.

Isabella I. ★★★★★

I was looking for something lighter than a Barolo for a weeknight pasta dinner, and this Pelaverga’s vibrant acidity paired beautifully. The cherry and spice notes are subtle but present, making it feel both elegant and approachable.
